Is Your Personal Brand Authentic?

Building an authentic personal brand adds value to your credibility and industry authority.

Your Personal Brand Is Always Authentically You

I would hope from that heading that nothing more needs to be said about authentic personal branding. However, I’m compelled to elaborate on that thought—authentically you. Far too often, I see people in jobs that are literally destroying her health, her sanity, and her soul. This incongruence can kill you. There’s a twin this unhealthy lifestyle. It’s the person that claims they want to be something without ever making any investment towards becoming her new self. Let’s talk about how your personal brand is always authentically you.
In April 2017, I published a quote from Oprah Winfrey.

“Your true passion should feel like breathing; it’s that natural.”

Passion Gives Purpose. Purpose Gives Permission

So why are so many people doing their jobs instead fulfilling their purpose? Is it because a job needs to be done? We don’t live on the planet Krypton where are destiny and careers are encoding into our genetic makeup or the caste in which we’re born. You can choose. Yet, so many of us choose work over passion. It is no wonder we are exhausted and out of breath at the end of the day.

Have you ever asked a child what they are going to be when they grow up? Today’s, kids are clever. They want to be a marine biologist and save our oceans. Or, they may have a title for some other noble cause. My response is always the same, “what are you waiting for to do that?”

It’s Your Calling, Not Your Profession

I’ve heard adults tell me that they want to go into the ministry or become a teacher. They see these careers as professions and not true callings. So, they profess they want to do something. If she were called to it, they would already be doing it somewhere, in some way. You don’t go into the ministry—you minister. Teachers teach. They don’t go into teaching. The only way to become an author is to write. If your passion is not already flowing out of you, it’s not in you.

Authentic Personal Brand Are Self-Evident

A woman once told me that she wanted to be a makeup artist and wanted to go to cosmetology school to become a makeup artist. I knew her well enough to tell her that was a terrible idea. Needless to say, she totally hated my candor. I never gave my supporting rationale for her bad idea. However, it wasn’t a judgment without reason.

I knew that she never watched the thousands of beauty and health videos of YouTube. She didn’t have a library card to checkout books on cosmetology. Blogging or vlogging about beauty wasn’t her style. She didn’t spend all of her extra money on new beauty products or learn new makeup techniques. There was simply no investment of any kind towards becoming a makeup artist. So, if you’re not doing anything to become that now, what evidence is there that you would persist to finish cosmetology school. Even more, what evidence would there be that you would continue in the work at all if you’re not doing it now.

Being Authentic Is Easy

Don’t struggle to be you. Building your personal brand should flow out of  you like a unstoppable river carving a path through mountainous terrains in your life. It can’t be damned up with an inauthentic narrative.

So, when I ask someone close to you, who you are. They should be able to tell me your brand story without prompting or coaching. They see you doing it. You’re living out your passions in the real world, daily. This is what it means to have an authentic personal brand. It’s not only  the story we tell ourselves. It’s the stories others tell about us. When those two are in agreement, we’ve built an authentic personal brand.

Can You Reinvent  Yourself Personal Brand to Be More Authentic

There are moments in life where we need to reinvent ourselves. After a divorce, after losing a job, the death of a loved one, or just a period of self-discovery can all prompt a the need for a new perspective. Most often, it’s not reinvention that you need. You need to reframe your narrative to hone your focus.

The most important thing about an authentic personal brand is that it doesn’t ignore the current reality. Instead, an authentic brand remakes reality to fit the new perspective. That takes courage and perseverance. It may require tearing down a mythology to build a your new legend. In the end, be true to yourself—authentically you.
