Star Wars: The Last Jedi Inspired Cosplay Photography with Rey

There are very few stories that inspire the fervor and cosplay as George Lucas’ Star Wars Canon.  The Star Wars Universe has it’s own visual language and costumes that continues to inspire my imagination and work. For our May The Fourth Cosplay Photography, Star Wars Rey was my inspired shoot.

For this shoot, we drew our inspiration from Star Wars: The Last Jedi. My friend and muse, Alyson helped me to bring Jedi Rey to life with costumes and lightsabers to create some unique in-camera action. This cosplay photography folio is one of many shoots we’ve planned in the Star Wars Universe. I do several cosplay photoshoot shoots throughout the year. You can find upcoming and past costume photoshoot events on Model Call. This photoshoot was set for May the Fourth! Alyson is incredible as Star Wars Rey.

Cosplay Photography for Inspiration and Experimentation

Cosplay Photography is one of my favorite genres for experimenting with multiple photography disciplines. This Star Wars costume shoot was no exception.

Here’s some photography styles used for this cosplay shoot:

  • Light painting photography— using light as a visual element with long exposures.
  • Colored gel photography— add more color saturation and vibrancy to photography.
  • Slow sync flash— Finally, I added studio strobe photography to freeze the action.

Blending all of these elements takes planning and time. However, the Star Wars cinematic universe is the perfect place to incorporate all of these styles for cosplay photography. The costuming and props were the final piece to bring this whole story together.  Finding the right Rey costume requires a bit of research. However, if you’re in the Dallas-Fort Worth Area, I would encourage you to visit Magic Etc. in Fort Worth or the Dallas Vintage Shop in Plano. We’ve got great options for costumers in the DFW Metroplex for cosplay photography. Finally, I wish you luck finding genuine lightsabers. They are harder to acquire.

There is more to come in my costumed Cosplay Photoshoots.

Enjoy and leave a comment below on how science-fiction or cinematic stories inspire your work!

May the Force Be With You, Always.
