Cam Evans Featured in Shutter Magazine August 2019
Cam Evans, Dallas-based photographer and owner of MADEGRANDBYCAM, has new photography featured in Shutter Magazine, August 2019—The Lighting Issue.
The Story Behind the Shot
I am passionate about fitness photography. The human form at apogee is amazing. This fitness shoot features colored gel photography. The gels create a saturated palette on my subject, Dani’s skin.
This was the final set in our shoot for the day. Dani is a yoga master. Her flexibility made posing a cinch!
Below, I’ve recreated the studio lighting setup for this image. This setup incorporated a three-light studio strobe setup. The key light was angled at 45-degrees above Dani. Each studio strobe was placed on opposite sides of Dani.
In production, I used my Phottix flash trigger to turn lights on as needed. In the end, the two side lights became the key and fill.
Retouching and Finalizing the Image in Post Production
Like all photography, my digital darkroom is where I create the final look. After capturing 80% of what I want in camera, I completed the final 20% in post-processing.
Originally, the image had several elements from the studio in-frame. For example, the C-Stands legs were in frame. There was coconut oil prints on the floor. Thus, the oil prints were removed in post. I removed the clutter from the image by using a tight crop for the feature in Shutter Magazine. For this article, I provided the original landscape shot.
Behind the Shot Bonus
I edited this portrait while updating the MADEGRANDBYCAM™ branding wordmark. The MADEGRANDBYCAM™, fourth-generation identity was inspired by the color gradient in this shot. The final image can be scene below.
